We did it! With a record breaking 3,614 votes, kokako have been crowned 2016’s Bird of the Year! Your response has been massive and we’ve well and truly smashed our goal of one vote for each kokako
A huge THANK YOU to everyone who voted for kokako, helped to promote our campaign, raise awareness and to spread our song. Competition winners for our 2 kokako experiences will be drawn shortly and results posted by the end of the week.
On that note, thank you to Kokako Organic Coffee, Old Forest School – Vintage Venue, Abracadabra Cafe & Bar, Pukaha Mount Bruce, National Wildlife Centre, Kaharoa Kokako Trust, Otanewainuku Kiwi Trust and Rotoehu Ecological Trust, for their donations which made the 2 experiences possible.
Massive kudos and respect for Team Kea and Team Piwakawaka for their 2nd and 3rd placing respectively. Honourable mention also to Team Gannet for their entertaining video. With just under 20,000 people voting in this year’s competition, I think it’s fair to say we completely re-wrote the rule book
Finally, to Oscar Thomas, our campaign manager, thank you, thank you, thank you. You’ve done an outstanding job and we’re proud to have worked for you, and the campaign, to spread the song of the kokako.

We here at Team Kokako HQ have been absolutely blown away by the support we’ve received from voters in this year’s Bird of the Year competition. We’re also very aware that kokako are one of New Zealand’s more elusive birds – so we have a couple of prizes so we can help you see one (or two)
Prize 1 – a weekend in Rotorua for the winner and up to 3 friends/whanau, with accommodation at Old Forest School, coffee and hot chocolate provide by Kokako Coffee, a $25 voucher for use at Abracadabra Café and guided tours around the Rotoehu, Kaharoa and Otanewainuku kokako populations.
Prize 2 – Entry to Pukaha Mt Bruce, and a meet and greet session with Kahurangi, their talking kokako!
A huge thanks to the groups and organisations that have helped to make this happen!!
We are keen for any other supporters to supply some additional goodies
Terms: The prize cannot be exchanged for money but can be transferred to another person if you can not make it and feel you know someone deserving of the trip. It must be used between April and October 2017 to avoid kokako breeding season. Transport to and from BOP and Pukaha Mt Bruce is not supplied, neither is food (unless we can attract some more event sponsors). All Bay of Plenty locations contain wild kokako so there is no guarantee of seeing them, however you will be out with Volunteers who live and breath kokako regularly so you should be in for a fairly good chance.
Breaking news: Aotearoa’s Got Talent highlights, shocks and show stoppers, for those who missed the live show at 4am this morning. A great end to a great long weekend http://www.birdoftheyear.org.nz/your-vote/127?vote #VoteKokako #BirdOfTheYear #3000
