Dave, Chris and Chris have completed the third day Dave, Chris and Chris have completed the third day of the survey and we have some exciting updates!

They have started in what we call the “western Pongakawa Ecological Area” which is bordered by Rotoehu Rd. 38 pairs have been recorded in “PEA2B”. This is up 16 pairs from 2019!

Today, 20 pairs were recorded in just the southern half of “PEA2”. Get this - in 2019, 22 pairs were recorded in THE WHOLE of the PEA2 area.

So far, these are excellent results for the individuals and groups, which support the Rotoehu kōkako population. BIG thank you to you all! And more updates to come!

Meet the two people leading the team of specialist Meet the two people leading the team of specialist surveyors, undertaking the massive job of counting all the kōkako in our forest 🌳

Dave and Amanda have worked with kōkako for 13 and 6 years respectively, carrying out kōkako surveys across the majority of sites all around the motu as well as translocations, post-release monitoring and nest finding 🪺

They will be working alongside a team of 5 other ecologists to find out how many territorial kōkako are now present at Rotoehu 🐦

They arrive in Rotorua tomorrow and head into the forest to start work soon. Good luck to the team! Happy counting!

Some last minute seedling and sapling monitoring o Some last minute seedling and sapling monitoring of our new block which will have its first ground based pest control starting on Wednesday. It’s fantastic to get this pre monitoring completed as it will help to show if our pest control is working: lots of seedling equals less browsing animals or seed-eating pests in the bush which in turn equals happy biome!
